Moths Drink the Tears of Sleeping Birds
for alto saxophone, electric guitar, percussion, piano, and electronics
All musical performance is ritual. Which is a pretty mundane thing to say - there are so many ways It can be interpreted it easily looses any meaning. That being said, I think the question of how exactly music is connected with ritual is much more fertile. With this piece I wanted to explore that connection, and those musical experiences that actively and consciously evoke a sense of ritual. I’m still not sure how that will play out over the course of this piece though since only the first section is complete. There will definitely be more lighting and more theatrics. Possibly a smoke machine…
Moths Drink the Tears of Sleeping Birds was commissioned by the Hinge Quartet.
